Fabric GSM: Choosing Weight by Product and Use
GSM is useful, but weight alone does not determine warmth, opacity, recovery, durability, or perceived quality.
What does fabric GSM tell you?
GSM means grams per square metre. It is a consistent way to compare fabric mass, but it is not a complete quality score. Two fabrics with the same GSM can behave very differently because of fibre content, yarn size, knit or weave structure, finishing, and compactness.
How should a target GSM be selected?
Choose a target range from the desired performance, climate, silhouette, and price position rather than selecting a number in isolation.
- Lightweight tops prioritize breathability and drape but may require opacity testing.
- Structured T-shirts need enough body to hold shape without feeling rigid.
- Fleece programs balance face appearance, brushed-back warmth, shrinkage, and pilling resistance.
- Performance knits require recovery, stretch consistency, moisture management, and seam compatibility.
What evidence should support a material claim?
Words such as premium, heavy, soft, or performance are subjective. Ask for measurable composition and weight, then evaluate a physical cutting or sample. Where relevant, confirm shrinkage, colorfastness, pilling, stretch recovery, spirality, abrasion, and wash appearance against the intended care method.
What should the approved fabric standard record?
Record the approved fabric supplier, construction, composition, weight tolerance, color standard, finish, and test expectations. Bulk material should be assessed against this agreed standard rather than memory of the sample.
